The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) is working to create healthier communities across Minnesota by expanding opportunities for active living, healthy eating and tobacco-free living.

The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) is working to create healthier communities across Minnesota by expanding opportunities for active living, healthy eating and tobacco-free living.

In Polk, Norman and Mahnomen counties, SHIP efforts are coordinated through their respective public offices in Crookston, Ada, and Mahnomen.

SHIP is a locally driven effort. Communities choose strategies focused on making long-term, sustainable changes in schools and child care facilities, communities, workplaces and health care settings.

Chronic diseases are among the leading causes of death in Minnesota. SHIP works on preventing chronic diseases by strengthening the capacity of communities to create their own healthy futures.

Thanks to SHIP, our local communities are:

    • Making biking and walking easier in towns such as Crookston, Fosston and Mahnomen with expanded trails such as the Fosston Fit Trail and a paved trail coming in September along Highway 59 in Mahnomen.

    • Working with health care sites to strengthen connections to community to ensure their patients are referred to appropriate evidence-based programs in their area.  Programs, such as the I Can Prevent Diabetes class, have showcased partnerships between local public health and RiverView Health, Essentia Health of Fosston and Essentia Health Ada.

    • Supporting breastfeeding families with Breastfeeding Tents at Polk, Norman, and Mahnomen county fairs and lactation spaces and breastfeeding policies at many regional organizations, including:

    • Essentia Ada

    • Benedictine Living Community of Ada

    • RiverView Health

    • Norman County

    • City of Crookston

    • Polk County Public Health

    • Villa St. Vincent

    • Providing accessible community based agriculture plots for community members in Twin Valley and Crookston.

    • Supporting the City of Ada to adopt Tobacco Free Grounds policies for two of their city departments.

    • Assisting Essentia Health Fosston, Essentia Health Ada and Benedictine Living Community of Ada in removing sugar-sweetened beverages from their facilities.

    • Establishing Polk County’s county-wide Nutrition Policy that ensures employees have more options of healthy snacks at the workplace.

    • Supporting Northwest Mental Health Center revised Sick Leave Policy to allow time to be used for mental health needs as well as physical illness.

    • Supporting City of Fosston’s comprehensive plan’s strong focus on Health in All Policies.

Launched in 2008 as part of Minnesota’s bipartisan health reform effort, SHIP works to help Minnesotans live healthier lives while building healthy, vital communities.
