East Grand Forks junior forward Kolton Aubol recorded a hat trick Tuesday to lead the Green Wave in a 5-1 victory over Crookston in East Grand Forks.

In the first period, East Grand Forks recorded a power play goal and a pair of shorthanded goals in the span of just three minutes, 12 seconds to take a 3-0 lead.

The Pirates added a power play goal with 1:12 left in the first period, but Aubol added two goals in the second period to put the game out of reach.

"Yes, it was a night of special teams with five of six total goals scored either on the power play or man short from both teams," said Pirate Head Coach Jon Bittner. "We are still learning to lead and process and execute, especially on the power play."

Pirate senior goalie Kollin Erdman recorded 35 saves, while Green Wave senior netminder Hunter Aubol had 16 saves.

"Hunter Aubol was good as was their first line," Coach Bittner said. "I thought we didn't do poorly 5-on-5 but the specials were good as the speed and years of experience in the nets and their special teams units were evident.

"One thing, all the mistakes that cost us last night are fixable," Coach Bittner continued. "That is a real positive and our kids are proud competitors and last night's game did not sit well with them."

Senior forward Zack Lawdermilt put the Green Wave up 1-0 with 6:22 left in the first period with just 13 seconds left on a man advantage.

Following a five-minute major boarding penalty on East Grand Forks with 5:18 left in the period, a miss played puck at the blue line allowed Lawdermilt to steal it and rush down on a breakaway. Erdman made the initial stop but junior center Tommy Hajicek cleaned up the rebound to make it 2-0.

Just 42 seconds later, another turnover by the Pirates, this time in their own zone, allowed Aubol to fire a quick low shot that beat Erdman to make it 3-0.

Crookston got on the board with 1:12 left when junior Ryan Edevold fired a shot from the high slot and junior Connor Morgan tipped it past Hunter Aubol to make it 3-1.

In the second period, Kolton Aubol put the Green Wave up 4-1 with a power play goal just 43 seconds in when he took a quick pass from senior Tyler Hajicek in the slot and threw a quick shot at the net at found the inside of the pipe just past Erdman.

Aubol completed his hat trick with 3:44 left in the second period.

The Pirates, now 6-15-1 on the season, will host Red Wing on Friday. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m.
