The 2010 Miss Crookston Scholarship Pageant, celebrating its 20th year in the current format, takes place Friday at 7 p.m. in the Crookston High School Auditorium. Ten contestants will vie for the title. Three are profiled here. Four were in Monday's Times and the other three will be featured Wednesday.
Tamika Wold
Q: First of all, some background info: Your family – parents, siblings, dogs, cats, etc.; your talent; and your sponsors.
A: My family consists of my dad Peter Wold and my step mom Suzanne, my mom Claudette Bruley and my step dad Danny. My sisters are Kari Brault and her husband Corey and they have a baby boy on the way, Kelly Towstick, Kaitlyn Hammer and her husband Casey their son Alex and daughter Sophia, and their mystery baby on the way. My brothers are Jon Bruley and his wife Kristin and they have two daughters Lauren and Keira, Aubrey Wold, Chris Towstick, and Sabre Wold. I have 4 dogs, 3 cats, 1 bird, and 1 bunny between both of my houses. I have a grandpa that lives at the Villa and a grandma and grandpa that live in New York. My talent is a monologue about a girl who is trying to break up with her boyfriend on a roller coaster and it has an interesting ending that you will just have to see. My sponsor is the Crookston American Legion Auxiliary.
Q: What activities are you involved in at school and elsewhere? Have you received any awards or special recognition for your accomplishments?
A: I am involved in the Leo Club at school. I am the manager of the volleyball team. I am a member of the Crookston American Legion Auxiliary. I have lettered in art twice for getting into art shows, and I have also lettered in choir.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I love to read and listen to music, I think it’s relaxing and I enjoy getting lost in a good book. I also like to play with my pets.
Q: What are your plans after high school, and how do you see yourself in ten years?
A: After high school I plan on joining the Army National Guard, and I hope to go to school for social work although I haven't decided where. In ten years I hope to be married and have kids.
Q: Tell us about your platform.
A: My platform is Reading Across America and the title is a quote by Fredrick Douglas: "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." I think reading should be emphasized in schools and communities, because it is one of life's simple pleasures that everyone should get the chance to enjoy.
Q: What do you hope to take away from the Miss Crookston experience?
A: I hope to gain some life experience and skills that I can use later in life. I also hope to make friendships that will last a lifetime with the girls in Miss Crookston with me.
Ciara Brewster
Q: First of all, some background info: Your family – parents, siblings, dogs, cats, etc.; your talent; and your sponsors.
A: My parents are Charles and Rhonda Brewster. My siblings are Aaliyah, Alexandria, Taleesa, Jasmine, Jordan, Charles Jr., Geoffrey, Bruce and his wife Katie. For my talent I well be singing. My sponsor is RiverView
Q: What activities are you involved in at school and elsewhere? Have you received any awards or special recognition for your accomplishments?
A: I am involved in soccer, basketball, track and field, choir, Leo Club, student council and SOS. I have lettered in soccer, basketball, Treasurettes, and track and field. I won most spirited play award in soccer two years in a row and also have been on the honor roll.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to the lake, bake, shop, star gazing, singing, dancing and sleeping.
Q: What are your plans after high school, and how do you see yourself in ten years?
A: I see myself attending a 4-year university, hopefully the U of M where I will study medicine. In 10 years I see myself graduated from college and medical school, married and maybe starting a family.
Q: Tell us about your platform.
A: My platform is about embracing the fact of being a minority in the small town of Crookston because being different is a beautiful thing. I would like to raise the awareness of the minority in Crookston by telling kids to embrace their culture and all the things that make us all so different.
Q: What do you hope to take away from the Miss Crookston experience?
A: I hope to gain self confidence and make great memories with all the girls and just have a good time.
