  • The Pirate girls' tennis team earned their first win of the season Wednesday, beating Section 8A rival Roseau 4-3 in Roseau.
All of the matches were decided in straight sets with Crookston winning at first and second singles and first and second doubles.
"At third doubles I felt we should have turned that one," Pirate head coach Mike Geffre said. "Ally's match, she played well. Alyssa played a girl that is pretty good and Alyssa had to work hard in that one. One and two doubles had a little hiccup in the second set."
Coach Geffre said Section 8A can be broken down into tiers. He hopes the Pirates will be in the top tier by the end of the regular season.
"We were discussing with the girls that there are three teams in the section that are on the bottom, three teams kind of in the middle and three, on paper, towards the top. There's not a lot of difference between the middle and top teams this year, though. Our goal is to be in the top four come seeding time. We took a good step yesterday."
