  • The owner of a Duluth head shop that openly sold synthetic drugs is about to learn his sentence.
James Carlson, who ran the now-closed Last Place on Earth, was convicted on 51 felony counts last October.
Federal prosecutors are asking U.S. District Judge David Doty to send Carlson to prison for 20 years at his sentencing Thursday. They say it will send a strong warning to other synthetic drug traffickers who might think the drugs are legal.
Carlson's attorney, Randall Tigue, is arguing for three years and has already said they'll appeal Carlson's conviction. He's also seeking a delay in the sentencing so he can gather more evidence.
Doty is also scheduled to sentence Carlson's girlfriend, Lava Marie Haugen, who was convicted on four counts.
