  • Researchers from the University of North Dakota are studying the impact of tropical thunderstorms on unmanned aircraft flights.

The project is part of a $75,000 grant from Northrop Grumman Corp., one of the world's largest aerospace companies and the maker of several unmanned aerial systems.

The study will investigate appropriate avoidance distances while flying unmanned aircraft around tropical storms, and the climatology of those storms.

UND atmospheric science professors Gretchen Mullendore and Mike Poellot (PELL'-it) are the principle investigators. The team will include three students from the department.
