  • The Crookston Pirate boys' hockey team, joined by a player from Grand Forks, a player from Devils Lake, and Crookston High School would-be senior Paul Bittner, who plays for the WHL's Portland Winterhawks, wrapped up their series of spring and summer hockey tournaments over the weekend in Grand Rapids.
The Pirate roster was significantly larger at previous tournaments, but several players had scheduling conflicts and could not make it to Grand Rapids. The games are glorified scrimmages for the most part designed to develop current high school players and introduce younger players to high school-level hockey, but the competition becomes spirited at times.
