  • A canvassing board will have to decide whether to identify the vote count for candidates receiving write-ins in Minot's mayoral election.

Ward County Auditor Devra Smestad tells the Minot Daily News that identifying write-ins isn't required if the outcome of an election wouldn't be affected. According to state law, a write-in candidate can request a count only in a very close contest.

Chuck Barney ran unopposed in the election last week and got more than 1,300 votes.

The number of votes cast for all write-in candidates was just more than 1,000.

The canvassing board was slated to meet Monday.
