  • Horse racing is back at the Chippewa Downs in Belcourt.

The Minot Daily News reports races began Saturday and will run each weekend through July 6.

Horses will be competing for purses of about $2,000. Some high stakes races will have purses of up to $8,000.

Chippewa Downs features a half-mile oval with a 350-yard straight-away. The newspaper reports that thoroughbreds will run races of four to eight furlongs, the latter a distance of one mile.

Doug DeMontigny is the chairman of the Turtle Mountain Outdoor Recreation Development Association. He says horses in the field are from across the U.S. and Canada.
