  • Polk County deputies, Crookston Police, East Grand Forks Police and Thief River Falls Police cited 32 unbelted drivers from May 19 to June 1 as part of a Click It or Ticket seat belt education and enforcement campaign,
    More than 360 unbelted motorists were killed in the last three years (2010-2012) in Minnesota, representing 42 percent of the total motorist deaths, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. In Polk County during this time period, 10 unbelted motorists were killed and 11were seriously injured.
    Of the 587 motorists killed in unbelted deaths during 2009–2013, 237 (40 percent) were motorists ages 15–29.
    Deputies and 0fficers worked 125 hours of extra patrol during this campaign. These officers performed 236 traffic stops.
    Of those traffic stops 93 citations where issued. 33 citations where issued for seat belt or child seat violations. 21 speeders were given citations, 12 citations where issued for driving after cancellation/suspension or revocation. 27 people where issued citations for other offenses. Eight individuals where arrested, five for out standing warrants and three for DAR, DAS or DAC.
    Toward Zero Deaths
    The Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement and education is a component of the state’s Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative.
    A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes — education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response.
