  • The future is no longer in doubt for an annual football game that has pitted a high school team in Wahpeton, North Dakota, against one in neighboring Breckenridge, Minnesota, for nearly a century.

Officials were uncertain the rivalry that dates to 1920 could continue because of football district realignment in Minnesota, but the Minnesota State High School League is allowing schools to request that certain matchups continue, the Daily News reported.

"More than 90 percent of the schools' requests were met," the league said in a statement. That included the Wahpeton-Breckenridge Harvest Bowl, played annually in late August or early September.

"We get to continue with the Harvest Bowl and this friendly rivalry against one another," said Breckenridge athletic director and football coach Chad Fredericksen. "It sets the tone for the whole season. Whoever ends up winning it usually has a pretty dang good year. We're really looking forward to continuing it."
