  •     Dear Mayor Dave Genereux:
On behalf of American Crystal Sugar Company, I would like to acknowledge the hard work that you, the City Council, and members of City staff have done in an effort to find RV sites for employees to support the American Crystal harvest.  Many citizens of Crookston have voiced concerns about the Castle Park location as an RV campground.  Based on observations from 75 miles away, it appears that the arguments on both sides have been reasoned and respectful.  Sometimes, political leaders are forced to make difficult decisions.  In this case, the democratic process has worked.  Your constituents made their voices heard, and you responded.
American Crystal Sugar Company has been a strong part of the Crookston and Polk County economy for many decades.  As times change, we need to evolve and adapt.  One of the adaptations that we are now making is to ensure that we have workers to support the piling of millions of tons of sugarbeets each fall at the Crookston factory and other receiving sites.  We have been extremely pleased with the high quality of our harvest employees we call “RVers” who are part of this effort.  Many of them make working in the Red River Valley during our sugarbeet harvest a yearly event they look forward to.  We believe that there are many more of these solid citizens who would like to earn some wages helping with our harvest, but we need to find a place for them to park their RVs for a few weeks in the fall.
Again, we appreciate the careful consideration that was given to the Castle Park location.  We also appreciate the fact that “perfect” options very rarely are presented for consideration.  With this in mind, we look forward to continuing cooperation with the City of Crookston to find a location that suits the needs of the people of Crookston, our harvest employees, and American Crystal.
