The Pirate softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Northern Freeze in Newfolden, Minn. Thursday 14-5 and 13-5.

In game one, Crookston led 3-0 after two innings but Northern Freeze exploded for 14 runs in the next three innings, including nine in the fourth.

Junior Danelle Trandem pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Pirates and junior Danica Brekken came in to pitch 2 2/3 innings in relief.

Brekken was 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while senior Lizzy Awender was 2-of-4 with a run scored.

Carly Safranski pitched all seven innings for Northern Freeze to get the win. Jules Efta was 3-of-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

In game two, Northern Freeze jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Crookston battled back to tie it at 4-4 after three innings. Northern Freeze led 7-5 after the fourth and added six runs in the sixth for another big win.

Freshman Macy Strem pitched all six innings for the Pirates.

Brekken was 2-of-4 with a home run. Strem, sophomore Tori Demarais and sophomore Nicole Goosen each had two hits.

Safranski was 2-of-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

The Pirates fall to 1-14 on the season. They will host two teams Friday with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 4:30 p.m. and Badger/Greenbush-Middle River at 6:30 p.m. The Section 8AA Tournament begins Tuesday, May 20.
