Starting Wednesday the Pirates have 5 meets in 7 days.
A rainy, chilly day at Minakwa Golf Course might be just what Brady Heppner needed to jump start his season. The senior had struggled recently but posted a 74 Monday at the Pre-Subsection North Meet for medalist honors.
The Pirates finished runner-up, two strokes behind Roseau.
"We got it in," Pirate head coach Steve Kofoed said of the meet. "It was the first time we've played at home in two years. And it was 70 inside the clubhouse.
"Hopefully playing at home heals all the other wounds," coach Kofoed said of Heppner. "It's kind of like winning solves things. You might not be playing well but if you get a win it give s you confidence. Brady hit his opening tee shot out of bounds but found a way to make bogey. He hit another OB on eight. His short game was working well. Brady had five penalty strokes on the round."
Making up the rest of Crookston's team score was sophomore Isaac Westlake with an 80, freshman Charles Eickhof with an 82 and sophomore Doug Larson with an 84.
"The course was playing five to six strokes harder," Kofoed explained. "Isaac, Charles and Doug played well. It was one of those days playing in between your ears. If you feel cold and let that creep in to your mind. You have to take it one shot at a time, one hole at a time and get your hands back in your pockets. We battled and that was the thing."
The Pirates are improving with every meet but Kofoed sees even lower scores in the future.
"We need Isaac. At the three spot we'd like to Isaac a little lower," Kofoed said. "If we can get that from our four, five and six guys. Isaac had a pair of 77's on the weekend and an 80 today. With the course five strokes harder that 80 was probably a 75."
The Pirates have a busy week with the Red Lake Falls/Fertile-Beltrami Invitational Wednesday, the Thief River Falls Invitational Friday, the Roseau Invitational Saturday, the East Grand Forks Invitational Monday and the Detroit Lakes Invitational Tuesday.
"We lost by two today and Roseau pounded us by 40 this weekend at Fargo North," Kofoed explained. "We go up there on Saturday and Roseau is a place we always play well. Maybe we'll get the Rams by a couple strokes at their home invite."
