The Pirates will compete Friday and Saturday at the Fargo North Invitational at Edgewood Golf Course. The Pre-Subsection North Meet will be Monday, May 12 at Minakwa Golf Course in Crookston.

The Pirate boys' golf team finished sixth of eight teams at the Pre-Section 8AA Meet at Long Bow Golf Club. Fergus Falls ran away with the meet, scoring 308. Detroit Lakes came in second at 313 and Crookston finished with a score of 336.

"We had nice weather which was good," Pirate head coach Steve Kofoed said. "The sun was out for a good hour of the day. It looked like rain was coming but it just sprinkled. The team scores were very similar to the past few years. Some of the top golfers struggled but teams had others step up. For individuals that 75ish number is going to be key. The way we're making decisions and hitting the ball we are struggling to get in the 70s. That 10 stroke jump is a lot to figure out."

Leading the way for the Pirates was sophomore Parker Nicholls with an 83. Freshman Charles Eickhof and sophomore Isaac Westlake each shot 84, while sophomore Doug Larson shot an 85 to round out the team score. Senior Brandon Conklin, golfing as an individual, shot an 87, freshman Ethan Christopherson carded an 89 and senior Brady Heppner shot a 91.

"Charles had a goood start and was mature about the way he played," Kofoed said. "He was not mistake free by any means, but an 84 for the first time on the course is good. It will be nice to see him play a second practice round there. I can only imagin he'll play better.

"Parker played well and played mature for us," Kofoed continued. "He started well and had a hiccup in the middle. He played very well coming in, although he doubled his last hole. But his average drops with that round."

Kofoed said it's all about putting yourself in the best position to score and eliminating the big numbers.

"Isaac's round was similar to what it was in Bemidji," Kofoed said. "He was asking how to get rid of those doubles. It's all about shot selection. He hit some great shots. You have to figure out how one bad swing doesn't blow up. It kills your score.

"Doug improved a little bit," Kofoed continued. "He was 10 over for his first six holes then three over for the next 12 holes. He hit his driver really well. This was Doug's second tournament so he's a few days behind.

"Ethan played Long Bow as a seventh grader but he said he didn't really remember it, " Kofoed continued. "Brandon was playing it for the first time. Brandon didn't play too bad. A couple holes he hit himself into the wrong spots. He thought course fit his game and I think it does because he hits the ball straight and puts it in play. He's not trying to challenge things and get in trouble off the tee. Ethan's driver was not going as well as he'd like. He started to hit three wood off the tee and that worked. One bad swing leads to a double and derails your progress. Ethan has to try and make nine to 10 pars in a round."

The big surprise on the day was Heppner's score of 91. A state qualifier last year, Heppner got into trouble early and struggled to get into a groove after that.

"Brady had a tough start, he doubled the first and on the second hole got in a hazard and took an eight," Kofoed said. "He started pressing and forgot about what you have to do at Long Bow to post a good score. Keep it in play and take advantage when you can. Hopefully it's one of those immature flashbacks. You have to realize you can't get frustrated on hole two."
