  • Boys' tennis: Pirates split, fall to Otters but beat Green Wave

  • The Pirate boys' tennis team split matches Friday in East Grand Forks, Minn., losing 5-2 to Fergus Falls but beating the Green Wave 4-3.
    Pirate freshman Matt Garmen won both of his matches on the day against seniors. The sophomore doubles team of Jake Roesch and Elijah Phaiah won both of their matches too.
    Against Fergus Falls, Crookston won with Garmen at third singles and at third doubles in three sets with Roesch and Phaiah. The Otters won the rest of the matches in straight sets except for fourth singles where sophomore Jordan Bengtson went three sets before falling short.
    Against East Grand Forks, the Pirates swept the doubles matches, all in straight sets, and won with Garmen at third singles. Sophomore Bobby Tiedemann took senior Ty Misialek, who is the favorite to win the section singles title, to three sets but fell short.
    Crookston is now 3-8 on the season and will travel to Moorhead, Minn. Tuesday for a dual with the Spuds. The Northwest Quadrangular is set for Thursday in Crookston with Bemidji, East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls competing. The Pine City Tournament is scheduled for Saturday.
