  • Cleanup of illegally dumped radioactive oil field waste has begun at an abandoned building on the outskirts of the northwestern town of Noonan.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that Secure Energy Services began the cleanup on Wednesday.
Officials reported the illegal dumping of hundreds of radioactive oil filter socks in late February. They said it's the state's biggest incident to date of illegal dumping of the tubular nets that strain liquids during the oil production process.
Company manager Robert Krumberger says the building contained about 60 cubic yards of filter sock waste, instead of the 40 cubic yards originally estimated by state officials.
Authorities don't know who's to blame, and the whereabouts of the building's owner aren't known.
The state is paying for the cleanup with oil company fees.
