  • Pirate junior Danelle Trandem had three hits and pitched a complete game Tuesday, allowing just one run and striking out seven, as the Pirate softball team beat Red Lake County Central 9-1 in Plummer, Minn.
"Danelle pitched well and let the defense help behind her," Pirate head coach Katie Lariviere said. "Three games into the season and I'm liking what I see with defensive play and positions."
The Pirates committed just one error.
Trandem helped herself out, going 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI. She walked nine batters and allowed three hits but Red Lake County Central was unable to capitalize.
Seniors Carly Welter and Lizzy Awender and junior Danica Brekken each had three hits for the Pirates. Brekken scored three runs and drove one in, while Welter had a double. Sophomore Tori Demarais was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
Brittney Bray pitched all seven innings for Red Lake County Central, allowing nine earned runs on 18 hits and one walk.
"The girls are getting more confident up at the plate and timing the pitch to get a good quality at bat," explained Lariviere. "Each game we have been increasing the number of hits and players seeing the base path. It was a nice day to play softball with the sun shining, warmer temps and come home with the win."
Crookston scored two runs in the first inning, four in the third and one in the fourth before Red Lake County Central got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Pirates added a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Crookston junior varsity also won their first game of the season 12-8.
The Pirates are now 1-3 on the season and will travel to Thief River Falls, Minn. Friday for a meeting with the Prowlers.
