  • A woman tried to assault a member of U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp's staff at her Bismarck office Thursday afternoon, police said.
Heitkamp was in Washington and not in the office during the incident. Nobody was hurt, police said.
Authorities said a member of Heitkamp's staff met with the 62-year-old woman around 1:20 p.m. in the office at the William L. Guy Federal Building. Staff members told police they are familiar with the woman.
Sgt. Mark Buschena of the Bismarck police said sometime during the discussion the woman "grabbed the staff member by the shoulders and tried to swing at her."
Said Buschena, "She was restrained relatively easily before we got there. I think the employees pretty much had it under control."
Police would not identify the staff member.
"I'm incredibly proud of my staff for working hard every day to help North Dakotans and offer crucial assistance," Heitkamp said in a statement. "The work they do truly changes lives. And their work should never come at the expense of their safety.
"I greatly appreciate everyone in my Bismarck office and our law enforcement officers for responding so quickly to the incident today," she said. "The legal process is now taking place."
Orr said the woman was released and it hasn't been determined whether she will be charged with a crime.
