  • The Pirate boys' tennis team had their home opener Tuesday with a dual against Bemidji. The two battled to several close matches but the Lumberjacks pulled out a 5-2 win.
As evidenced in the photos, mounds of snow were piled outside the Highland Courts as Pirate head coach Mike Geffre said it was a lot of work to make the courts playable. The CHS Courts are still covered in snow.
Bemidji won three of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. It won two of the three matches that went to third sets.
"They won two third-set tiebreaks," coach Geffre noted. "If we win one it's 4-3. In the 7-5 sets if we can find just one more game. We had some close matches. It was a doable match and a good opponent.
"In general, the singles played pretty well," Geffre continued. "Bobby played a pretty good player and it was a good match. Bobby has played Misialek of East Grand Forks to three sets and he's ranked third in Class A. Andy Gregg played well and hit the ball well at times. He needs to be more multi-dimensional. Matt Garmen rolled over his guy. That was probably the quickest match of the day. Jake Widseth, a freshman, played a senior to three sets. Our doubles needs to get back to the basics. We double faulted a lot. Between one, two and three doubles we had 30 to 40 double faults. We need to be getting serves in and getting into points. Singles is probably easier because you don't have to direct your shot as fine. It's something we'll be working in the next few days and weeks."
The Pirates travel to Thief River Falls, Minn. Thursday for duals with Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls. On Saturday they compete in the Alexandria Invitational with duals against Becker, Alexandria and Litchfield.
