  • An annual report shows the Williston Police Department received 21,000 calls for assistance in 2013.
The Williston Herald reports police officials say their goal is to make that number higher. A call for assistance doesn't always result in a report.
Police Chief Jim Lokken says it is necessary that residents report anything that seems suspicious even if it doesn't hint to be criminal.
Lokken says some years ago everyone knew their neighbors, and their neighbors' children and cars, allowing them to detect suspicious activity. But he says the recent increase in population has changed the interactions that residents have with their neighbors.
People have flocked to the area in search of jobs associated with the oil boom. The influx of people has led to a spike in crime rates.
