  • Mandan this spring plans to shut down nearly all of the wells that have been sucking up an underground diesel fuel spill for nearly a decade.
The spill was discovered in the mid-1980s. BNSF Railway agreed in 2004 to pay more than $30 million in cash and real estate to settle a lawsuit.
Some of the money has been used for the wells. The Bismarck Tribune reports a consultant installed 300 wells to go with 60 that had previously been installed.
Consultant Tim Kenyon says the city has gone from 4 feet of diesel under a large part of downtown to only a handful of wells collecting the fuel. He says 322 wells will be shut down this spring, monitored for a year and likely decommissioned in spring 2015.
