Douglas Aure, of Champlin, hit a cable barrier on Highway 169 during the snowy morning commute Thursday. His spinning tires caught fire, then ignited the SUV's leaking fuel. Maple Grove Officer Jesse Mathwig was first on the scene, grabbed his fire extinguisher, but couldn't knock down the flames. The vehicle's doors were locked and Aure was unconscious.
Hennepin County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Hagen arrived and together they pulled Aure from the burning vehicle after using a flashlight to smash the driver's side window. Aure's grateful daughter, Rachel, tells KARE-TV she can't thank the officers enough. She says even if they would have arrived a minute later, the outcome could have been much different.
