Residents who live near the Missouri River in Bismarck have rejected a proposal to fund a flood protection levee.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that about 150 residents were asked to decide if they wanted to pay part of the cost of the $1.3 million project over 15 years through a special assessment district.

The proposal failed 54-46 in a mail-in vote by landowners.

The state Legislature had approved $350,000 to pay for some of the levee costs, but that hinged on a favorable outcome of the special assessment district vote.
