Every Pirate scores at least 3 points.
The Crookston Pirate boys’ basketball team won big against their neighbor, the Climax/Fisher Knights, at the Crookston High School gymnasium on Monday night. Senior center Emmanuel McCollough scored 13 points to lead both teams in points. The two teams combined for a total of 22 scorers.
“We had energy and we got the ball into Emmanuel early and I think other guys just fed off of that,” Head coach Greg Garmen stated. “Everybody got in the mix for scoring, we got everyone a bucket. Kids moved the ball well and they were very unselfish.”
Junior guard Aaron Hollcraft put up 12 points while senior center Michael Hefta laid in 11. The Knights were led by senior guards Levi Dahl and Cody Magsam who had 12 and 11 respectively.
The Pirates started out on 26-0 run before Climax/Fisher could put up a point. Seven Pirates scored in that stretch alone. They came out looking to be the aggressor, getting easy buckets from the fast break. Crookston was able to score seconds into the game when McCollough hustled and laid in a missed shot right off the tip. The Pirates never looked back. Junior guard Seth Derosier helped power the run with five points. Crookston lead 45-13 at the half.
“That helps your shooting percentage and gets your confidence going.” Coach Garmen talked about getting layups early in the game, “That just got into everybody, we started looking to the head of the pack and getting guys open for easy looks. In the half court we were able to get easy looks to Emmanuel and Michael which leads to a pretty good shooting night for the Pirates.”
Crookston just kept rolling in the second half, outscoring the Knights 47-31. The Pirates got nice contributions in the second half from players like junior forward Joey Koenig, who finished with nine points and senior guard Cody Klamm, who finished with seven points.
“You just keep rolling and set some other goals,” Garmen explained the second half. “You want to do this or that on defense and keep scoring on offense.”
The Pirates matched their win total from last season and improve to 12-3, looking ahead to their game on Saturday, at home against Pelican Rapids at 2:30 p.m.
