The Pirate girls' hockey team flew past Mandan 8-2 Thursday in the Pirate Holiday Invitational at Crookston Sports Center. Freshman Macy Strem, sophomores Tori Demarais and Leah Trostad, and senior Brooke Schmitz each scored two goals.
Demarais got the Pirates off to a 2-0 lead after the first period with a goal at the 2:11 mark and another, her fourth of the season, with 5:17 left on an assist from senior Rachel Kanten.
Schmitz made it 3-0 nine seconds into the second period, assisted by senior Lizzy Awender. Trostad scored about a minute later and Strem scored with 5:23 left in the second period to make it 5-0.
Mandan finally got on the board on a goal by Mariah Marsh, scoring just 12 seconds after Strem.
Trostad got the Pirates back on track, though, with her fourth of the season with 4:20 left and Schmitz finished out the second-period scoring with 2:01 left on assists from Awender and senior Amber Trostad. It was Schmitz's fourth goal of the season.
In the third period, Madison Ripplinger scored with 8:03 left on a shorthanded goal to make it 7-2. Strem finished out the scoring with 50 seconds left, her third goal of the season.
Senior goalie Erica Allrich recorded 17 saves in the win for the Pirates. Sarah Zachmeier posted 29 saves for Mandan.
Crookston improves to 4-8-1 on the season and will host Fargo South/Davies today at 7:30 p.m.
In other games from the Pirates Holiday Invitational, East Grand Forks beat Fargo South/Davies 11-0 and West Fargo beat Park Rapids 7-0.
