  • The 72-year-old mayor of North Dakota's largest city says he's running re-election.
Dennis Walaker has led the city's effort in recent years to achieve permanent flood protection from the Red River. The city has been forced to prepare for major flooding in four of the last five years.
Walaker tells The Forum newspaper there are "too many things going on right now" for him to step down as mayor.
He says that includes a proposed Red River diversion channel, a new city hall and new public health office.
The former city public works director was first elected mayor in 2006.
