  • Park Board: Curling off to a good start

  • Golf simulator at CSC needs to be available more, mayor says

  •     Twelve teams are competing in the first-ever adult coed Wednesday night curling league at Crookston Sports Center, and there's interest in launching an afternoon league on Wednesdays, too.
That was the word from Parks & Recreation Director/CSC Manager Scott Riopelle at this week's Park Board meeting. The night league is taking a two-week break over the holidays, since Christmas and New Year's each fall on Wednesday, but there will be open curling for anyone who wants to curl on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
There are about 18 people on the substitute list for the 12 teams, Riopelle said, and that has led to interest in potentially starting a Wednesday afternoon league as well. There are enough people for six teams now, he said, and the hope is to add up to six more. It would start at 1 p.m. in the CSC's Gold Arena.
Riopelle said Elliot Solheim and Jason Lovejoy are leading the effort to launch the afternoon curling league.
Also, in January, Riopelle said physical education classes from Crookston High School will be giving curling a try on Thursday mornings.

The new golf simulator at the CSC is getting some use, but the response so far hasn't been "huge," Riopelle said.
Park Board member and At Large Crookston City Council member Wayne Melbye said that could be because it's not open and available on weekends and after hours when most people probably want to use it.
Mayor Dave Genereux suggested that creating a YouTube video showing how to use the simulator might be a handy way to allow increased access to it without having to have someone constantly on hand to monitor the simulator.
"I think we're losing a lot of potential revenue if it's not open on the weekends," the mayor said. "It's just about knowing what to push and not to push. Once people use it once, I'd think that they'd have a pretty good grasp after that."
Genereux also suggested the possibility of placing a video camera in the CSC Information Desk so whomever is staffing that would be able to monitor golf simulator activity.
