Vern’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston.

    Vernon A. Bratvold, age 83, Crookston, died Sunday morning, November 24, 2013 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.   Vern was born on August 31, 1930 in East Grand Forks, MN, son of Gilbert and Hilma (Johnson) Bratvold.  He grew up and was educated at East Grand Forks, graduating from the Northwest School of Agriculture in 1948.  He was united in marriage with Helen Hodgson on November 4, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston.  He farmed in Crookston all of his life and following retirement from farming, Vern continued to help his son, Dan, with his farming operation.  He worked part-time with the Railway Express meeting Soo Line Trains and loading and unloading freight.  Following retirement, he worked as a limo driver with the Emerald Limousine Service, drove for the Polk County DAC and also drove for Tri-Valley.  He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, having served the church in a number of capacities over the years.  He also served on the Crookston Township Board and with the Crookston Grain Elevator Board.  Vern enjoyed fishing, bowling, horseshoes, and playing cards (Smear, Pinochle, & Whist, to name a few).  He loved spending time with family, his siblings, his wife, children and grandchildren.

     Vern is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen; three sons: Douglas (Judy) Bratvold of Cambridge, MN, Daniel (Terry) Bratvold of Crookston, MN, and David (Michelle) Bratvold of Elk River, MN; sixteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; a sister: Violet Bren of East Grand Forks, MN and a sister-in-law: Delores Bratvold of Twin Valley, MN.  He was preceded in death by his parents: Gilbert & Hilma; brothers: Arthur, Ernel, Melford, Orien, Roy & Lester; sisters: Hazel Martin & Evelyn Vonasek.

     Vern’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston.  Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston on Tuesday from 5-7 PM, with a 7 PM prayer service, and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.  Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
