Bernadette Howlett, 90, succumbed to cancer Tuesday, October 29th, 2013, passing away peacefully at home where she lived with her daughter, Susan, in Grand Forks, ND.  Bernadette was born in Gentilly, MN, on October 15, 1923, to Louis and Laura (Demarais) Baril, the second oldest of 7 children. She graduated in 1942 from St. Joseph Academy, Crookston, MN.  On July 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to John Howlett while in Baltimore, MD. They resided in Crookston for a short time; then relocated to Fisher where they raised their 3 children, Barbara, Susan, and John Jr.  They lived near Mentor for a few years, but returned to Crookston in 1987.

Bernie enjoyed being a homemaker in the 5 new homes built by Johnny, her carpenter husband. They would do all the finish work together for each house. Despite this luxury of new homes, they kept life simple and God-centered in their Catholic faith. She volunteered in the church and community, always ready to lend a helping hand to friends. Bernie was active in the church Ladies Aides and Funeral Guilds of Fisher, Mentor, and Crookston, the Fisher Sewing Club, the Fisher Legion Auxiliary, and she did some babysitting. Bernie was happiest when serving up great meals and delicious deserts for her family and friends, and when hosting big family get-togethers on special occasions. She also tended a large garden and did much canning for many years. When retired, Bernie and Johnny enjoyed some traveling and tackling house remodeling projects while visiting their eldest daughter and their son. Bernie’s graciousness will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She was dedicated to her family and will be remembered by all for her generosity in giving of herself to serve family and others.

Bernadette is survived by 2 daughters and 1 son: Barbara and Ken Hansen, Isle, MN; Susan Howlett, Grand Forks, ND; and John and Renee Howlett III, Montana; also 7 grandchildren: Kristine Novotny, Steven Hansen, Jessica Gosser, Dustin Howlett, Garrett Howlett, Sonya Abu, and John D. Howlett, and 4 great-grandchildren; also, her sister, Patty Olson, Texas; and 2 brothers, Louis Baril, MN, and Gerald and Dolores Baril, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Laura Baril; sister, Jean Mauer; and 2 brothers, Virgil Baril and Richard Baril; her husband of 67 years, Johnny (2009); their dear first great-grandchild Josephine Gianna Gosser (2002), and several other relatives.
