RSVP by Nov. 4 for Nov. 7 event

    Eighty years ago, 16 Polk County residents gathered in Crookston. They formed a society to collect, promote and communicate the history of Polk County.   

    The Polk County Historical Society’s 80th anniversary will be celebrated at a dinner and meeting Thursday, Nov. 7, in Bede Ballroom on the campus of the University of Minnesota  Crookston. The social begins at 5 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6,  the program at 7:15 and the business meeting at 8 p.m.   

    The keynote speaker will be director of the Minnesota Historical Society and State Historic Preservation Officer Stephen Elliott of St. Paul.   

    Before coming to Minnesota in 2011, Elliot served as the head of the New York State Historical Association. He began his career at Colonial Williamsburg, where he spent 28 years in various positions including vice president of education administration and planning. He then served five years as executive director of the First Freedom Center in Richmond, Va.   

    “He is known for his passion for history. We pleased to have a guest speaker with such an impressive resume,” said PCHS President Jerry Amiot of Crookston.   

    The public is welcome to attend the celebration. Meals (chicken, pork chop or vegetarian lasagna) are $13. By Monday, Nov. 4, reservations must be made and payments sent to the Historical Society, P.O. Box 214, Crookston, MN 56716.
