  • This season is proving eerily similar to 2011 for Pirate football as they beat Warroad in the season opener and have lost its next six games. Crookston's latest loss came Friday against Thief River Falls as the Prowlers won 37-6 in Thief River Falls, Minn.
In 2011, the Pirates did not win a game the rest of the season, finishing 1-8. The Pirates still have time to not repeat that season as they close out the season Wednesday at home against East Grand Forks and then move on to the Section 8AA Playoffs.
The Prowlers racked up 21 first downs Friday, holding the Pirates to just three. With a heavy rain falling for most of the game, Thief River Falls stuck with the ground game, posting 288 rushing yards holding Crookston to just 31 rushing yards.
Crookston's score came early in the fourth quarter when junior Mike Hajostek recovered a fumble and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown.
Ian Lund and Nathanael Holocek led the Prowler offense with Lund running for 97 yards on 19 carries and Holocek running for 83 yards on ten carries. Each scored a touchdown.
Thief River Falls built a 22-0 lead at halftime with Andrew Johnson rushing for a 22-yard touchdown in the first quarter, Lund running for a one-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and Alex Finseth catching a 36-yard touchdown pass from Zeb Nelson late in the second quarter.
Holocek rushed for a two-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter and Riley Bakken ran in a three-yard score with two minutes remaining in the third to close out the Prowler's scoring.
Pirate senior running back Blake Bergeron rushed for 22 yards on nine carries.
Pirate junior quarterback Aaron Hollcraft left the game just before halftime with a knee injury. He was 1-for-3 passing for seven yards.
Junior quarterback Parker Salentine was 3-for-10 passing for 24 yards.
Crookston and Warroad are both 1-6 in the Section 8AA standings. The Pirates host East Grand Forks Wednesday with the opening kickoff at 7 p.m. The Green Wave are 0-7 on the season.
