  • The Pirate girls' tennis team was edged 4-3 by Staples-Motley Friday in the semifinals of the Section 8A Tournament at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. The Cardinals then went on to beat Park Rapids 4-3 for the championship and also qualified a singles player and doubles team for the State Class A Tournaments.
Friday's semifinals match between No. 4 seeded Crookston and No. 1 Staples-Motley, which is ranked No. 5 in Class A, was knotted at 3-3 with the first singles match left on the court. Cardinal Mikayla Wing, ranked No. 7 in Class A in individuals, beat Pirate senior Amber Trostad for the win.
Wing also went on to take the singles championship, while the Cardinal doubles team of Kelsey Zetah and Nikki Edin finished runner-up in the doubles tournament to also qualify for state.
Park Rapids, which was ranked No. 9 as a team, was nipped by Staples-Motley but the Panther doubles team of Christina Smith and Julia Renner won the championship, while Julia Smith placed second to qualify in singles.
Crookston struggled in the individual tournaments, with no one advancing out of the quarterfinals. Sophomore Leah Trostad and senior Lizzy Awender lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual doubles champions, Zetah and Edin. Senior Amber Trostad and eighth grader Ally Tiedemann lost in three sets to the eventual third-place finishers, Bailey Janzen and Marrisa Jevne of Roseau.
The Pirates' season finishes with a record of 11-7 in duals. Seniors on the roster include: Trostad, Awender, Kennedy Resendiz, Lydia Shafer, Rachel Kanten and Tiffany Trudeau.
