So far, the biggest field-grown entry comes in at just under 32 pounds.
The annual contest to see who has the biggest field-grown sugar beet is again underway at the Irishman's Shanty in Crookston. So far, owner/operator Paul Gregg says, three beasts of a beet have been entered, a 31.8 pound sugar beet from Stroble Farms in Warren, a 27.2 pound sugar beet from Scott Oberg, and a 25.2 pound sugar beet from Knutson Farms. Sugar beets weighing in at 21.7 pounds and 13.1 pounds have also been brought in.
The contest dating back more than two decades is a sugar beet harvest tradition, Gregg says, adding that big beet entries will be accepted until the harvest is completed.
