Katie Sheetz and Matt McClure earn the weekly honors.
A pair of golfers originally from Grand Rapids, Minn., were named the UMC Teambackers Student-Athletes of the Week for the week stretching from Sept. 25 - Oct. 2. Katie Sheetz (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) was named the UMC Teambackers Female Student-Athlete of the Week while Matt McClure (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) was selected as the UMC Teambackers Male Student-Athlete of the Week. Sheetz is the first women’s golfer honored with the weekly award along with first non-volleyball player to be honored in the four-week existence of the award. McClure is the second men’s golfer to earn the distinguished honor joining Evan Lunda (Fr., Centuria, Wis.) who earned the award in the first week of the season.
Sheetz won her first-ever collegiate tournament last weekend after shooting an 83 in the one-round Bemidji State University Invitational at the Bemidji Town and Country Club in Bemidji, Minn. Sheetz led the Golden Eagles to a second-place finish. Sheetz has found a lot of success at the course in Bemidji as she placed second last season as a freshman at the BSU Invitational and won the women’s flight of the 89th-annual Birchmont Golf Tournament, outside of collegiate competition, last summer.
McClure helped the University of Minnesota Crookston to their best start in recent history at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Fall Championship as the team placed fifth overall after the first two days of play. McClure was in first place after shooting a 73 on day one but dropped off on day two after shooting a 79. However, the Golden Eagle golfer is still in a tie for seventh place and just six strokes off the lead heading into the NSIC Spring Championship, which will be played at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn. April 11-12.
