The Golden Eagles fall to 6-7 (1-4 NSIC) with Saturday’s loss.

The Golden Eagle volleyball team suffered two losses on the weekend, a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12) loss to Upper Iowa Friday in Fayetta, Iowa, and a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) loss to Winona State Saturday in Winona, Minn.

The Golden Eagles fall to 6-7 (1-4 NSIC) with Saturday’s loss. They will return home to face No. 2 Concordia, St. Paul, the six-time defending national champion, on Friday at 7 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium. On Saturday, the team hosts Minnesota State at 4 p.m.


UMC came back from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set Friday but Upper Iowa would come back from down 11-8 to score seven of the last eight points to win the fifth set and the match 3-2. The match was the third-straight five-set match for the Golden Eagles dating back to last Saturday’s 3-2 loss to St. Cloud State in Crookston.

UMC was led by a career-high 24 kills by Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.), breaking her previous career high of 20 kills earlier this season against St. Edward’s University. Looker hit .286 for the match. In addition, the Golden Eagles had solid balance with three other players who each had 10 kills. Alexandra Skeeter (Sr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) had 10 kills and hit .200, as did Morgan VanGerpen (Jr., MH, Overland Park, Kan.). Maggie Perrel (Fr., RS, New Germany, Minn.) also added 10 kills for the Golden Eagles, notching double-figure kills for the third-straight match. Freshman Sierra Trost (Fr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) paced the team with 55 assists as the Golden Eagles hit .230.

Four players had over 10 digs for UMC defensively. Looker led the way with 15 digs while Chelsea Wiesner (Sr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) and Paige Mitchell (Sr., DS, West Palm Beach, Fla.) each added 13 and Sketter had 12. VanGerpen led the team with five block assists while Perrel had four block assists.

Upper Iowa hit. 247 for the match led by 17 kills from Jennifer Mundt. Mundt hit .484 for the match. Melanie Behnke added 16 kills for the Peacocks. Hailey Brown set up the Upper Iowa offense with 42 assists.

Defensively, Upper Iowa was led by 16 digs from Chelsea Berry while Kelsey Hinrichs added 14. Alisha VanderWoude led the Peacock block with one solo block and six block assists.


The Golden Eagles fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-20) to Winona State Saturday at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn.

The Golden Eagles hit .128 for the match led by 13 kills from Looker. Skeeter added eight kills for UMC. Trost led UMC with 31 assists.

Defensively, the Golden Eagles had 57 digs, led by 15 from Wiesner. Mitchell chipped in 12 digs while Looker added 12. VanGerpen led the UMC block with one solo block and three block assists.

Winona State hit .205 for the match paced by 11 kills from Kathleen Omelina, who hit .381 for the match. Katie Froehle and Alli Glisch each added seven kills apiece. The Warriors were paced by a pair of setters as Kaley Jacobson had 19 assists and Kayla Uhlenhake added 15 helpers.

Defensively, Leah Perri led the way with 16 digs while Bekah Saugen added 13.
