My name is Ryan Porter and I’m a Junior in High School. I am enrolled in the PSEO program that Crookston High School offers. What is PSEO? It is the Post Secondary Enrollment Option. PSEO allows juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA to enroll in and attend college while in high school. Students must meet those requirements to be eligible. You get all your books free and if you’re taking 2 or more classes, you get a laptop provided by UMC. Options are to enroll full time in college or part time. If you choose part time, you would spend time out there as well as time at the high school. I was introduced to this option as I first got to the high school. I thought it was exactly what I wanted to do.
I am currently a full time student at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. To be full time requires at least four 3-credit classes. I am taking Economics, College Algebra, Composition 1, and Regional Geography in my first semester. I was very intrigued by how the atmosphere was out there. It is way different than any place I’ve been before. I am pleased with my classes I am taking now, and I’m already looking forward to next semester to take more! Every class I’m in requires a laptop and the teachers go through the class through a slide show that they put up. We all have access to it and we can follow along.
I decided to do this because I wanted a new challenge that not every class at the high school provides. I classify myself as an above average student and thought I was ready for the next step. I am going to be full time out there for the rest of my high school career. My goal before graduation is to enroll in 4 semesters and about 48-60 credits. I was given the opportunity to receive free college and jumped right on it.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new academic challenge. PSEO does require a lot of commitment. For every hour spent in class, there are about 2 hours out of class work that needs to be done. You are responsible to be in class and complete your homework. You need to take serious responsibility when you are out there.
Being in PSEO as well as a 3-sport athlete, I know I am going to have a lot to do. I was well aware of this when I was planning on doing this option from the start. This was one of the challenges I am willing to face. I know that I would need to make time for my academics and I have been doing great so far. Not having the same class everyday also helps me out a lot. It allows me to do my studies for a class during that time. I am very excited and looking forward to my experiences at UMC.
