A 54-year-old Bemidji man was killed early Sunday morning when he was struck by a vehicle at the 800 block of Paul Bunyan Drive South, which runs between Lake Bemidji and Lake Irving.
Police responded to the accident at 4:48 a.m. Sunday and found Andrew Willard Reed, 54, lying in the northbound traffic lane, police said in a press release. He died as a result of multiple head injuries, police said, after being struck by a vehicle driven by Floyd LaDuke.
No charges are pending, Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said, and LaDuke passed a breathalyzer test and showed “no signs of impairment,” according to a press release issued Monday.
Reed had been featured in an article in Sunday’s Bemidji Pioneer on homelessness. Reed is one of two homeless men to die in a public place this year in Bemidji. The first occurred on June 21 with the drowning death of his friend, Adelbert James “Butch” Ryan, 63. Ryan’s body was found by two children riding their bicycles.
