A Fargo group is trying to convince developers to donate 25 acres of land for a large-scale botanic garden.

The Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society has hopes for a $4.2 million project that would be built in four phases. It would be based around a 2-acre Japanese garden dubbed the Garden of Mind and Soul.

Society executive director Jackie Williams tells The Forum newspaper that the group has about $1 million for operations to start construction of the garden, but won't raise additional funds until it has a viable site.

Williams say she believes the garden would become a destination.
