  • A grand jury has cleared Minneapolis police officers in the shooting death of a 22-year-old burglary suspect in a south Minneapolis basement in May, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Thursday.
After two days of testimony, the grand jury decided not to bring any charges, Freeman said.
"We are satisfied that it was a thorough, complete and professional investigation," he said at a news conference. "I respect it, and the community should respect it."
Grand jurors heard testimony from 19 witnesses, including 11 sworn officers, about what happened in the basement of an Uptown home where Terrance Franklin was shot and killed, Minnesota Public Radio News reported.
Freeman added that Franklin family attorney Mike Padden's allegations of a cover-up were "poppycock," the Star Tribune reported.
"It has no basis in fact. We're a free country. Mr. Padden can say what he wants to say. But he's dead wrong," Freeman said.
In a statement, Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said she supports the actions of her officers and agrees with the grand jury decision.
"Terrance Franklin's actions dictated the outcome on May 10," Harteau said at a Thursday evening news conference. "This could have had a different outcome. Terrance Franklin had numerous opportunities to surrender, but it was clear by his actions that from the beginning he had made the decision not to get caught at any cost."
Police officials have said Franklin fought with officers and grabbed one of their guns when shots were fired, killing Franklin and wounding two officers.
Padden has said Franklin's family will consider asking for a federal investigation and may also file a civil wrongful death lawsuit.
