    ECFE upcoming classes  
     
        The Early Childhood Family Education program in Crookston is thriving with upcoming classes for this fall and winter. The program offers classes and activities for parents and their children ages birth thru five at Washington School. Parents have a great influence on their children as the first and most significant teachers in their lives. Because the role of parenting is so important, ECFE is designed to include children and their parents in activities that strengthen parenting skills, encourage children in caring ways, and will bring parents and children together for a variety of shared experiences.
        The "Baby & Me" class, for ages birth to 12 months, gives parents and their babies the opportunity to explore and learn together. Activities in the areas of movement, sensory experience, music and exercise are included within these classes. It is offered the first Monday of each month and runs from 5 to 6 p.m. The instructor will be Francine Olson and the classes are held at Washington School ECFE room. No registration is required. Here is a list of the classes coming up:
        •    October 7 - "Let's Build a Better Baby"
        •    November 4 - "Music & Movement and Your Baby"
        •    December 2 - "The World, A Baby's Eye View"
        "Pop in and Play" is also a very popular class for ages birth to five years. You and your child can come and go as you desire from the ECFE classroom to the gym. You are free to explore and interact in a variety of ways including doing puzzles, building with wood blocks, cooking in a make believe kitchen, creating art and playing in the gym with equipment designed for young children. This free class runs the second Saturday of each month during October to May from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. The instructor is Mary Jo Halos and registration is not required.
    ECFE weekly classes
        Fall ECFE classes will be beginning the week of Sept. 16. For information and to register, call the Community Education office at 281-5078.
        "Oh, The Places We'll Go" is for ages birth to five years and runs Monday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Parents will select their favorite places to visit and explore in Crookston and the surrounding area. There is a family class fee of $50 and the instructors are Mary Jo Halos and Francine Olson. There is a maximum enrollment of 14 children. so register early.  
    Page 2 of 3 -     "Move and Play" is a Tuesday evening class for ages birth to five years that runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The class will begin in the Washington School gym where your child will explore equipment and participate in activities that encourage movement and creative play. After gym, children will engage in open play, circle time and enjoy a nutritious bedtime snack in the ECFE room. This class is instructed by Mary Jo Halos and has a family class fee of $50. There is also a maximum enrollment of 14 children.
        "Books Alive" is a Friday morning class for ages birth to five years running from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. It encourages pre-literacy skills in young children by engaging them in a new book each week and providing activities that make the book seem to COME ALIVE! Activities include: creative art, science and sensory exploration, music/rhythm/rhyme and dance, and imaginative play. The class ends with a cooking project which is enjoyed as a snack. The instructor is Mary Jo Halos and the family class fee is $50 plus a supply fee of $15. Maximum enrollment is 14 children.
        "Play Dates" is also a Friday class running from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 a.m. for ages birth to five years. You and your child will love having a "play date" and lunch party with your friends at ECFE! Class includes gym time, play in the ECFE room including story time, songs and dancing and interaction during lunch time together. This class is known to fill up fast so register early! The family class fee is $50, maximum enrollment is 10 families and instructor is Mary Jo Halos.
        "Mixed Age Magic" is a Wednesday morning class from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for ages birth to five years. Children and parents will enjoy interaction in an early childhood classroom that offers stories, songs, games, puzzles, creative projects and more. After the circle time of stories and songs, parents meet informally to share ideas and discuss topics such as positive discipline strategies, challenging behaviors, food, health and safety tips, and more. Children and parents conclude this magical class in the gym for active playtime with balls, scooters, parachutes, riding toys and other fun equipment. Instructors are Mary Jo Halos and Francine Olson. There is a maximum enrollment of 14 children and family class fee of $50.
    Early Childhood Special Events
        "Park Ride Night" will be Monday, Sept. 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. where children ages birth to five years are invited to ride a school bus to explore and play at both Wildwood and Schuster Parks. Buses will load at Washington School at 6:20 P.M. There is no cost for this event, however pre-registration is required. Call 281-5078 to register.
        "Teddy Bear Clinic" will be Monday, Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Riverview Health. Bring your teddy bear along and meet us at the main entrance of Riverview Health for a tour of the hospital. The Riverview staff will show you the nursery where they care for newborns. They will give your teddy bear an identification bracelet, check teddy's ears, and take an x-ray. You will also explore a hospital room and lay in a bed that goes up and down! This special event is a learning experience for children and teddy bears, alike.
    Page 3 of 3 -     "Literacy Family Night" will be Thursday, November 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Have fun learning together as a family!
        "Grandparents Night" will be Monday, November 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Washington School. Grandparents or special adult friends are invited to join children ages birth to five for an evening of special time together.
        These events are offered to all families with children ages birth to five years in the Crookston community. You do not need to be attending ECFE classes to attend a special event. Events are offered at various location in Crookston. We ask for free will contributions.
    More Offerings
        "Teen Parenting" will be Tuesdays starting September 10 from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. for teens and their children ages birth to two years. Teen parents and pregnant teens are given the opportunity to attend a weekly class to discuss parenting topics of interest in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Class will also include outside speakers, field trips, crafts, videos, incentive rewards and healthy snacks. Teen students will earn 1 credit toward graduation for attending a full year of classes. Transportation is provided. The instructor will be Francine Olson.
