Genevieve DeMers age 98 of East Grand Forks, MN passed away on Monday September 2, 2013 at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston, MN.
Genevieve DeMers was born on March 18, 1915 in Swift County, Benson, MN the daughter of Jean Baptiste and MaryAnne (Houde) Bonoit. The youngest of 15 children, Genevieve graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks, ND in 1933. Upon graduating she went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Grand Forks, retiring after 30 years of employment with the company. On September 30, 1942 Genevieve was united in marriage to Philip E. DeMers at St. Michael's Catholic Church in in Grand Forks. Philip DeMers passed away on June 21, 1996. Genevieve was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 52 year member of the Catholic Daughters and also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Hartsville Homemakers.
Family members who survive Genevieve include her children, Margaret Anne Mohowald of Grand Forks, ND and Pierre (Nanette Reed) DeMers of San Diego, CA; 3 grandchildren, Ritchie (Michiko) DeMers of Sioux Falls, SD, Randy (Jennifer) DeMers of Big Lake, MN and John (Stacie) Mahowald of Ritchfield, 2 great grandchildren, Lauren and Morgan Mahowald of Savage, MN, MN; 5 step-great-grandchildren, Conner, Abby, Jadyn, Landon and Halle Knipp of Richfield, MN; many nieces and nephews and good friends, Denise and Louie Martinez of East Grand Forks, MN.
Genevieve is preceded in death by her parents; husband Philip on June 21, 1996; 14 brothers and sisters; daughter-in-law Verna DeMers and son-in-law, Jack Mahowald. In lieu of flowers the family respectably asks that memorial be dedicated to the Altru Hospice, Villa St. Vincent of Crookston or Sacred Heart Development in memory of Genevieve.
