It'll be held at Downtown Square rain or shine, so if you're a vendor and have a canopy, you might want to bring it.

The rain and wind from a morning thunderstorm last week that destroyed the big white tent at Crookston's Downtown Square has slightly altered plans for the King of Trails Market Day to be held at the square on Saturday, Sept. 14.

"The event is still on, rain or shine, at that location, but we're going to ask that participating vendors bring some type of their own canopy," said Sandy Kegler of the Crookston Chamber & Visitors Bureau, who's heading up the Market Day and coinciding city-wide garage sale event. "All we can do is pray for nice weather."

While construction got underway on a permanent Downtown Square Pavilion in August, the Chamber-owned tent was put up prior to Ox Cart Days and was heavily utilized throughout the annual summer festival. It was left up afterward so it could be used during the King of Trails Market Day, but the wind and rain that socked Crookston during the morning commute on Thursday, Aug. 29 combined to be too much for the tent to take.

Details, details
Highway 75 was designated as the Historic King of Trails by the Minnesota Legislature in 2002, and as a Minnesota Scenic Byway in 2004.

To celebrate this event many communities all along the highway are participating in the King of Trails Market Day on Saturday, Sept. 14. Crookston's Marketplace will be one of many held that day all along the 411-mile route, promoted as "400 miles of great bargains."

The Chamber is looking for vendors who may be interested in setting up a booth and selling their wares. Anything goes: flea market vendors, antique dealers, people selling rummage sale items, church groups as well as arts and crafts people are wanted.

Organizers are also hoping local residents will participate in the annual city-wide garage sale. Maps will be provided to the public with the addresses of the garage sales along with hours of operation. They will be distributed at the marketplace as well local gas stations. Organizers will be promoting the market in surrounding communities as well as the Fargo-Moorhead and Grand Forks areas, so participants could benefit from wide exposure.

There is no charge to list your garage sale. Call or e-mail the Chamber office or register

The Downtown Square is located on the corner of N. Ash St. and 3rd St. Pre-registration is required for the Marketplace. The cost is $25 for a 10' x 10' space if you register and make your payment before Sept. 6. Register after that date and the rate will be $30 per space. To reserve your space, go to and click on King of Trails, or contact the Crookston Chamber & Visitor's Bureau at 281-4320.
