  • The Crookston Pirate football team will participate in a scrimmage at Hawley Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Pirates have now been practicing for two and a half weeks and are ready to tackle a jersey with a different color.
"I am very happy with the effort kids have put forth," Pirate head coach Scott Butt said. "It's time to go over and hit somebody. We had our first practice (Wednesday) where we went live. We walked out of there saying, 'we are done hitting each other.' We are ready to go hit somebody else. With hitting each other you worry about injuries and you start worrying about complacency. The kids are excited to get down there and hit somebody else."
As of now the total number on the varsity squad is 63, which is up from about 47 last season. Coach Butt noted the biggest classes are freshmen and juniors, but the sophomore class gained five players and is now up to nine.
With the increased numbers, the Pirates will be able to compete in the freshman, junior varsity and varsity scrimmages in Hawley.
"Due to numbers last year we could only be in two scrimmages," coach Butt said. "The ninth graders have really worked hard. This is a good group of kids. Everyone has worked hard and on days that they haven't, they figured it out quick and came back the next day and worked hard."
