  • Crookston Mayor Dave Genereux has proclaimed August 2013 “Rotarians United to End Polio Now Month.” He did so with Mary and Don Cavalier of the Crookston Rotary Club.
Don said there are 66 different Rotary Clubs in District 5580 and that the clubs have raised $73,000 for the cause. “Every 60 cents raised by Rotary saves a child,” Don said at a recent Crookston City Council meeting, at which Genereux made the proclamation.
A polio outbreak iwas recently reported in Somalia, so Rotary International sent teams to immunized newborn babies. “That’s what we do,” Don said, adding that Rotary’s polio eradication efforts span the globe, with only three countries, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, having no Rotary anti-polio presence.
Don said Crookston Rotary members will be seeking donations from local businesses and individuals. “We’ve raised $500 already,” he said.
