  • Hiller’s 81 near top of Masters qualifying, match play begins at Birchmont

  • In the final day of qualifying at The Birchmont Golf Tournament at Bemidji Town & Country Club in Bemidji Tuesday, Crookston's Chuck Hiller posted an 81 in the Masters Division to finish third. Jim Kennelly of Bemidji was medalist with a 74, while Joe Mayer of Bemidji is the defending champion.
    In the Mens Division, Seth Heppner qualified for the championship flight with another round of 73 to finish tied for tenth. Johnny Larson of Springfield, Minn. and Matt Skarperud of Omaha, Neb. each shot 138 as top qualifiers.
    Wyatt Hanson was four strokes from qualifying for the championship flight with a 159 (81-78). His tied for 44th finish should place him in one of the top flights. Also, Brady Heppner finished with a 161 (80-81) for 48th place.
    Hiller faces Edward LeBeau in the first round of match play today.
    Seth Heppner teed off at 8:05 this morning against AJ Oster in his first round of match play.
    Hanson and Brady Heppner both qualified for the President Flight and Hanson began his match play against Joe Selle, while Heppner took on Brandon Sletmoen.
    In the Junior 17 Championship, Crookston's Charles Eickhof and Dane Anderson began their first round matches at 7:45 a.m. against Eric Cann and Tyler Dunn, respectively.
    Tom Johnson, a Crookston native, rebounded from an 87 Monday to shoot 81 Tuesday but missed the Executive Championship Flight by one stroke. He will face Ryan Maher in the first round of the Executive Chairman Flight today.
