It'll cost you $10 a year for every vehicle you own.
During a meeting of the Polk County Commissioners on Tuesday, the board unanimously chose to authorize a new wheelage tax which will cost county residents $10 per vehicle under their ownership.
Commissioners had until August 1, 2013 to decide whether to pass the tax, which will raise an estimated $340,000 a year to be used for maintenance and repair of county highways.
The board also had a choice of collecting the tax via Polk County or having the state collect on the county's behalf. As with other counties in the state that have adopted the tax, Polk County's share will be collected by the state and funds will be then turned over to the county.
Counties in Minnesota, that implement the wheelage tax will have the option, beginning in 2018, to raise the tax up to $20 per vehicle.
