  • The Reds won Sunday evening, but not the Reds Crookston fans cheer for.
The Cass Lake Reds edged the Crookston Reds 10-8 at Jim Karn Field, handing Crookston its second loss of the week as it lost 6-3 to Thief River Falls on Wednesday in Thief River Falls.
On Sunday, both teams appropriately wore red jerseys, so the only way to distinguish Crookston from Cass Lake was by the numbers with Crookston's white outlined in black and Cass Lake's black outlined in white.
Crookston pitchers walked nine batters and did not receive much help from the defense, which committed several errors.
Dave Grabowski went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while Skip Toops was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Matt Morin was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Justin Johnson was 1-for-4 with three runs scored.
Dillon Nelson started on the mound for Crookston, going five innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Taylor Morlan pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs, four total, on three hits and five walks. Henry Stanaslowski pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two walks.
Cass Lake took a 3-1 lead after the first inning, while Crookston got a run in the fourth and three in the fifth for a 5-4 lead. Cass Lake, though, scored three runs in each of the sixth and eighth innings, while Crookston had three in the seventh.
On Wednesday, Thief River Falls scored four runs in the second inning and that is all it would need.
Bill Sullivan started for Crookston, allowing five earned runs, six total, on ten hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings of work. Morin recorded the final two outs.
Toops, Morin, Nick Wheelhouse and Sam Brule each had a pair of hits in the contest.
The Reds fall to 2-7 on the season and will host the Thieves Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. and Ada Sunday at 7 p.m.
