  • George Dalen Guttu, 86, of Pembina, ND, passed away from lung cancer June 11, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loving family. George was born February 22, 1927 in Red Lake Falls, MN, the son of Mathias and Clara (Dalen) Guttu. As a boy he moved with his family to Thief River Falls, MN, where he was raised and educated. In 1944, shortly after his 17th birthday, he entered the United States Navy and served on the USS San Saba, an attack transport used to transport troops to various locations in the Pacific Theater during WWII. George was honorably discharged in 1947 and returned to Thief River Falls.
On September 25, 1948, in Crookston, MN, he married the love of his life and best friend, Lorraine C. Lysne. In January of 1951, he was called back into the Navy for the Korean conflict. Spring of 1952 brought him and Lorraine to Wahpeton, ND where he attended the North Dakota State School of Science. In 1954, he was accepted into the United States Border Patrol where he served for seven years along the southern border before transferring to Portal, ND as an Immigration Officer. In 1966, George and Lorraine, their 6 children, a cage full of bunnies, and a German shepherd, traveled in a snow storm to Pembina, ND where he served at the Noyes Port of Entry until his retirement in 1990, having dedicated 40 years of his life to
    government service.
George was "the farmer" of his vegetable garden and it was where you could find him as soon as it dried out in the spring; however, his six children, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren - a garden of another sort, were his pride and joy. George was a voracious reader, loved to hunt and fish, go for rides to look for deer, chop wood, enjoyed coffee and cookies at any time of the day, and pie. He was a longtime member of the VFW Post #1874 and Pembina American Legion #77Above all else, for 65+ years, George loved and cherished his girl, Lorraine.
George is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Pembina, ND; and six children: Michelle (Michael) Schumacher, Pembina, ND; Jeff (Cathy) Guttu, Green Bay, WI; Michael (Carol) Guttu, Cherry Valley, IL; James (Jennifer) Guttu, Pembina, ND; Connie (Linn) Hodgson and Marica (David) Wilkie, Grand Forks, ND; brother, Elmer (Lois) Guttu, Olathe, KS and sister, Mavis (Peter) Pfeiffer, Sierra Madre, CA., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings; Carol Guttu and Lyle Guttu.
