  • Travis Vatthauer and Bobby Tiedemann lost their first round match of the State Class A Doubles Tournament Thursday, rebounded later in the day to win their first consolation match and then ran into a powerhouse team in the consolation semifinals Friday morning.
In the first round, the Pirate pair lost to Colten Hennis and Alec Richter of Eveleth-Gilbert 7-6 (9-7), 6-2; then defeated Zach Kantor and Mitchell Weiser of Foley 7-5, 6-3. Vatthauer and Tiedemann then faced Matt Henneman and Nick Ozolins of St. Paul Academy and lost 6-0, 6-0.
"We got down here and won a match, which was big," Pirate head coach Mike Geffre said after his doubles team was eliminated. "This team (St. Paul Academy) probably really should have been in championship bracket. They will not have a problem winning the consy championship. They don't have any weaknesses in their game."
The other Section 8A doubles team of Detroit Lakes' Isaac and Alex Fondrick played in the other consolation match today.
Thief River Falls' Logan Engelstad played at 8 a.m. in the semifinals of the singles tournament. East Grand Forks' Ty Misialek competed in the consolation semifinals of the singles tournament today too.
"Section 8A had all six participants still playing Friday," coach Geffre noted. "I guess that means we have some halfway decent players up here in the north."
